There is a saying in the medical world: “Prescription without diagnosis is malpractice.” The same should be true for plumbing. Yet, for years, the standard solution for a slow drain was simply to run a snake (rooter) down the line and hope it cleared the blockage.
If the water drained, the problem was “fixed.” But was it? Or did you just punch a small hole in a massive root ball that will grow back in three months?
In Ventura County, where mature trees and shifting clay soil are common, sewer line issues are rarely simple. Blindly snaking a drain can sometimes cause more damage, or fail to address the root cause. A sewer camera inspection changes the game. It puts “eyes” underground, allowing homeowners to see exactly what is happening inside their pipes in real-time.
What is a Video Inspection?
A sewer camera is a waterproof, high-resolution camera mounted on the end of a flexible, fiber-optic push rod. It has high-intensity LED lights that illuminate the inside of the dark pipe.
We insert this camera into a cleanout access point and push it through your main sewer line all the way to the city connection (lateral). Above ground, we watch the footage on a color monitor. We can record the video, snap photos, and measure the exact distance to any defect.
This technology allows us to spot:
- Root Intrusion: Fine roots entering through joints or cracks, creating webs that catch toilet paper.
- Offsets: Pipes that have shifted due to soil settling or earthquakes, creating a “step” that stops flow.
- Bellies (Sags): Sections of pipe that have dipped, holding standing water and waste constantly.
- Collapses: Structural failures where the pipe has crushed inward.
Buying a Home? Do the Scope.
If you are buying a home in Ventura—especially one built before 1980—a standard home inspection does not cover the sewer line. The inspector flushes the toilet, and if it drains, they check “pass.”
However, a sewer line replacement can cost $10,000 or more. Buying a home without a “Sewer Scope” is a massive financial gamble. You could inherit a clay pipe that is 90% blocked by roots or completely collapsed under the driveway.
Real estate experts and Angi strongly recommend adding a sewer inspection to your contingency period. It gives you leverage. If we find a break, you can ask the seller to repair it or give you a credit. If the line is clean, you have peace of mind.
Pinpointing the Dig Spot
The camera head also has a radio transmitter inside it. If we spot a crack on the screen, we can pause the camera right at that spot. We then use a locator wand above ground to find the exact position and depth of the camera head.
This means we can mark the ground with green paint and say, “The problem is exactly 4 feet deep right here.”
Without this technology, a plumber might have to trench your entire front lawn to replace the whole line. With it, we might only need to dig a small 3-foot hole to perform a “spot repair.” This precision saves your landscaping, your driveway, and your wallet.
