Before you dig anywhere on your Ventura County property, you need to know what is buried below. Hitting a buried gas line, water line, electrical conduit, or fiber-optic cable is a five-figure mistake at minimum — and the gas-line strike can be a fatal one. Professional underground utility location identifies every buried line before the shovel goes in.
What needs locating
Natural gas service. Buried water supply (main from the meter). Electrical service from the pole or pad-mount transformer. Cable, fiber, and phone lines. Buried propane (for inland Ventura County homes off the natural-gas grid). Sewer lateral. Irrigation lines. Older homes sometimes have abandoned utilities the current owner does not even know about.
Standard locate vs PVC-aware locate
Standard 811 utility locates use electromagnetic induction — they find metallic pipe and conduit. They do NOT find PVC. PVC water lines, irrigation, electrical conduit in PVC, and fiber-optic cable all need different techniques: ground-penetrating radar, tracer wire (if installed during original construction), or acoustic location.
When you need locate work done
Before any digging — fence post installation, foundation work, landscape grading, pool installation, sprinkler upgrades, deck footing work, driveway tear-out. Before tree planting near suspected utility runs. Before any excavation on a commercial property.
The 811 call (required by law)
California law requires homeowners and contractors to call 811 at least two business days before any digging. Utility companies dispatch locators to mark gas, electric, water, and sewer with color-coded paint or flags. The 811 service is free but covers only public utility lines — not your private lines (sprinklers, your own buried gas runs, etc.).
Specialized PVC and private locate
For PVC and private utilities not covered by 811, you need a specialized locator. Ground-penetrating radar reads soil density to find buried lines. Acoustic locators trace pressurized water lines. Tracer-gas methods work on dry lines. The combination identifies what 811 cannot.
For commercial properties and renovation projects
Commercial properties with multiple buried utilities benefit from comprehensive locate work before any landscape or hardscape change. For projects that include glass shower doors, custom bath enclosures, or interior renovation that triggers exterior utility access, specialized custom shower enclosure design and installation services coordinate with the broader project. For exterior glass and door work that intersects with utility runs around the building perimeter, sliding door repair and installation services handle the exterior-envelope side.
Documentation
Save the locate marks on a site diagram. Photograph them before they fade. The same locate work supports future projects and disclosures at sale. The CDC/NIOSH excavation safety guidance documents the casualty rate from utility strikes — locates save lives, not just budgets.
