
PVC plumbing is supposed to be the upgrade — corrosion-proof, durable, lighter than copper, easier to install. And for the most part, it is. But when PVC fails, the failure is sneakier than copper. PVC does not leave green corrosion stains around a pinhole. It does not heat the floor above a slab leak the way a hot-side copper line does. PVC leaks are often invisible until the damage trail finds a finish surface.
How PVC fails
PVC pipe itself rarely fails along its length. The failure points are joints — solvent-welded connections where the glue did not bond properly, where the cement was past its shelf life, or where the joint was stressed before it cured. Schedule-40 PVC joints can also fail from over-tightening at threaded connections that meet metal fittings.
Why detection is harder
Copper leaks announce themselves with corrosion residue, mineral deposits, and obvious water trails. PVC leaks just drip. The water flows along framing members, finds the lowest point, and pools — often far from the actual leak. By the time the homeowner sees a stained ceiling or a soggy carpet, the leak has been running for weeks.
Acoustic detection on PVC
Electronic acoustic leak detection works on PVC but requires different settings than copper. The frequency signature of water escaping a PVC joint is lower-pitched and easier to mask in ambient noise. Specialized equipment with tunable frequency filters catches PVC leaks that off-the-shelf gear would miss.
Thermal imaging
Thermal cameras still work — water at a different temperature than the surrounding structure shows up as a temperature anomaly. PVC supply leaks reveal themselves the same way copper leaks do, just with less heat differential (PVC pipe insulates better than copper).
Tracer gas testing
For stubborn PVC leaks, a non-toxic helium/hydrogen tracer gas mix gets injected into the line. Surface scanners detect the gas escaping through the leak. This is the most precise method for pinpointing PVC joint failures.
Repair approach
A failed PVC joint is usually a quick fix once located — cut out the bad fitting, install a new coupling, and the line is back in service. The expense is in the detection, not the repair. Pinpointing a leak in a 50-foot run of buried PVC could mean digging that whole run. Pinpointing it to a 6-inch zone means digging an access hole.
